Short history of the quarter of Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the northern district of Venice and is named after the Rio de’ Cannaregio, which was the main access to the city from the mainland before the railway connection was created. This area was traditionally inhabited by the ‘working class’ people, even though there are also several beautiful palaces facing the Canal Grande. In Cannaregio there is also the Jewish Ghetto and the famous church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli.
